Utah vs Pittsburgh; USC vs Hawaii

Utah vs Pittsburgh
The Utah Utes finally got to experience what it's like to win a season opener against a Top 25 team. They finally realized what it was like to get a good season started against a good team.

Brian Blechen intercepted a bad pass by Tino Sunseri in overtime, and Utah beat Pittsburgh 27-24. Joe Phillps kicked a 21 yard field goal to end the game, and to get a big season started for Utah. The Utes host TCU and BYU this year.

Pittsburgh struck first, and Dion Lewis ran for a touchdown 3 minutes into the second quarter. That lead didn't last too long though, for Jordan Wynn led a nice drive, and he hit Jeremy Brooks in the end zone to tie it. Utah forced a turnover, and Wynn hooked up with Brooks again to take a 14-7 lead.

In the third quarter the teams traded field goals, and Utah led 17-10 going into the fourth. Hutchins nailed another kick, and the Panthers were back within four.

But Jordan Wynn had an answer. He hooked up with DeVonte Christopher on a deep route to regain the lead. With less than 8 minutes left, some fans thought it was over.

But it wasn't. 48 seconds later, Tino Sunseri hit Jonathan Baldwin for a 42 yard touchdown pass, and Baldwin caught the 2 point conversion pass. Pitt was now within 3. And late in game, the Panthers started driving down the field. They got to the Utah 34.

They kept going. They got to the 13. But they couldn't punch the ball in the end zone. So Dan Hutchins kicked a field goal. He made it. But... Utah iced Hutchins. He had to re-do the kick.

Then, he missed the kick. But Utah iced Hutchins again. He has another chance! This time, he made it, and Utah didn't use their last timeout. The game went into overtime!

Utah won the coin toss, and they elected to defer. Pittsburgh started with the ball. Sunseri threw the ball to Mike Shanahan, but the pass was off target. Shanahan was well covered by Brian Blechen, and he got an interception. The Utes looked good.

Matt Asiata ran for 16 of his 65 yards on the drive, and he set up Joe Phillps' field goal that won the game for Utah. The Utes play UNLV next, and Pitt plays New Hampshire

USC vs Hawaii
Matt Barkley, Ronald Johnson, David Ausberry and Marc Tyler knew that even though the Men of Troy got banned from bowl games for 2 years, they knew they could still go undefeated. The road started here.

Matt Barkley played the game of his life, throwing 5 touchdowns. Barkley was able to throw his passes in the right places, and the Trojans beat Hawaii 49-36.

Tyler powered right through the Hawaii defense, breaking tackles and picking up chunks of yardage. He finished with 154 yards on only 17 carries, averaging more than 9 yards per carry! Allen Bradford ran for 52 yards on 8 carries, averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

In the third, Ronald Johnson returned a punt for a touchdown. He made a nice stiff-arm, and he used his speed to outrun the Hawaii defense. That gave USC a 34-16 lead. Hawaii came back with a touchdown, but Barkley found Ronald Johnson again for a touchdown.

But again, the Warriors came back. The score was 42-30. But a good kickoff return gave the Trojans good field position. Marc Tyler bolted 44 yards to the house, and USC locked up a win. 'SC won 49-36.

The Trojans play Virginia next, while Hawaii takes on Army next.
