Playoff race heats up; Thrilling football game

West Virginia vs Marshall (brief)
Marshall was 0-9 against West Virginia. The Thundering Herd won a bowl game, but they had not had a lot of success for a while.

The wait may be over; well, it almost was.

West Virginia rallied from down 15 points midway through the fourth quarter to beat the Thundering Herd 24-21. Geno Smith led 2 touchdown drives late.

Marshall took a 14-3 lead on a 96 yard touchdown completion, and then they took a 21-6 lead. The Herd looked to look the game up when they had the ball inside the Mountaineer 10, but they fumbled.

Screen passes helped Geno Smith set up a touchdown, and then the Mountaineers got the ball back. They ran the same offense, and Smith hit Will Johnson for the TD in the very back of the end zone. He hit Jock Sanders for 2, and it went into OT.

Tyler Bitancourt made a field goal, but Marshall had a chance. They kicked a 40 yard field goal, but it just missed to give the Mountaineers a shocking win.

NL West race
Giants vs Padres
The Giants pitching staff continued their dominating performance as San Francisco beat San Diego 1-0 to tie for the NL West division lead.

The game was scoreless through 6 innings, and both teams had only had 2 hits. But Aubrey Huff was hit by a pitch to start the seventh, and on the next play he got to second. Then the game's key play happened.

Nate Schierholtz hit a grounder straight to shortstop Miguel Tejada, and Huff ran to third. Tejada tried to get him out, but Huff beat out the throw. Schierholtz was safe at first, and on the next play, Huff scored, and Uribe beat out a ground ball. Schierholtz helped break up the double play.

The Giants got good production out of their bullpen. Santiago Casilla pitched 1.1 1 hit innings, Ramon Ramirez and Sergio combined to pitch a perfect inning, and after Javier Lopez allowed a single to Adrian Gonzalez, Brian Wilson came on.

Wilson got out of the inning, and he finished the game with 2 strikeouts, including a K on an outside fastball to end the game. Wilson picked up his 42nd save, which is tied with Rafael Soriano of the Rays for the MLB lead.

Troy Stauffer takes on Madison Bumgardner today, and 2 time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum (13-9) takes on Mat Latos (14-5), who has the lowest ERA (2.21) in the majors, and the man who would have had a perfectos had Eli Whiteside not beat out a ground ball on a hit that went off of Latos.
