Monday Night doubleheader

Chargers at Chiefs
When San Diego forced a 3 and out, didn't allow anything on KC's next possession and then scored, Chiefs fans though they were going to see the same story.

They were wrong.

Tony Moeaki and Dexter McCluster made big plays in their NFL debut, Jamaal Charles scored a touchdown as the Chiefs beat San Diego 21-14.

On the fourth possession on the game, San Diego drove downfield and Phillp Rivers found Antonio Gates on a slant. Gates was easily in the EZ, and San Diego led 7-0.

But that lead wouldn't last long. Just a few plays later, Kansas City struck back. Jamaal Charles got a hole down the left side, and he took it, scoring from 56 yards out. The score was tied.

When San Diego had the ball, San Diego gave the ball to rookie Ryan Mathews, who ran 15 yards. But Derrick Johnson made a heads-up play to knock the football out of Mathews' hands. Brandon Carr picked up about 16 yards on the recovery.

The Chiefs quickly got down to the 4 yard line, and on a pass play, rookie tight end Tony Moeaki broke free in the right corner of the end zone. Matt Cassel found him for 6, and KC took a 14-7 lead.

No one was able to score until Mike Scifers was punting, and he had a nice punt. Problem is, Dexter McCluster was returning the punt, and McCluster broke free down the left sideline. He got some key blocks, and he broke a tackle, and he was inside the EZ. At the half, the Chiefs were on top 21-7.

In the third, San Diego was able to drive to the 45 or 40 yard line of Kansas City a few times, but then they kept going for short passes. The Chiefs figured that out, and they came up with no points until late in the fourth.

With 2:23 left in the game, Legudu Naanne was wide open, and Phillp Rivers saw that. He hit Naanne, who caught the ball for 6 points. It was a one score game.

San Diego drove downfield, and Rivers hit Antonio Gates for a 37 yard completion. But Phillp Rivers wasn't able to convert on his first 2 downs, and Darren Sproles lost yardage. It was fourth and goal at the Chiefs 6.

The pass was incomplete, and a possible great season in Kansas City began. The Chiefs play in Cleveland next week, while the Chargers play host to Jacksonville.

Baltimore at New York Jets
Anquan Boldin made some key receptions, Willis McGahee ran for a touchdown as the Ravens beat the Jets 10-9. Baltimore's offense was a little sloppy, but the defense was punishing.

Shaun Ellis of the Jets forced a fumble, and the Jets recovered. They turned that into a field goal, and then they scored another field goal. New York led 6-0 after 1 quarter.

But in the second quarter, Baltimore drove downfield. Willis McGahee powered in for a 1 yard score, and the Ravens led 7-6 at the break.

In the third, Anquan Boldin showed rookie CB Kyle Wilson what it's like to be in the NFL. He beat out Wilson on 2 deep routes to make a total of 65 yards on 2 receptions. Baltimore scored a field goal on that drive.

In the fourth, the Jets made a field goal, and it was 10-9. New York got a couple more tries at the go-ahead points, but they just couldn't get the points.

Baltimore had a chance to run time off the clock late, and they were able to. Joe Flacco found Todd Heap in Jets territory for a big gain, and even though New York got a chance, Dustin Keller stepped out of bounds a yard short of a first down. Baltimore won the New Meadowlands opener 10-9.
