Music City Miracle Part 2; Huskies pull off upset; Yankee Stadium Thriller

UNC vs Tennessee It was all over. The Music City crowd was celebrating. Even after a missed extra point and 2 interceptions from QB Tyler Bray, the Volunteers had held on for a 20-17 win. Until the refs decided otherwise. They decided to put one second on the clock for the UNC Tar Heels, giving them a shot at a 39 yard field goal. Casey Barth drilled that and a 23 yarder, giving the Heels a 30-27 2OT win that was thrilling in every way. North Carolina started with the ball, and Shaun Draughn would take advantage. He received a pitch from senior QB T.J Yates and found a seam to the left, picked up the first, made a juke and had 7 points for UNC. However, that wouldn't last long, for Bray found Gerald Jones wide open in the end zone for 6. Late in the second quarter the score was 10-7 in favor of the Heels, until the offenses got going. Tennessee got the ball with about 2 minutes left in the half and with 1:30 left in the half, they went for a play action pass. A pumpfake did

Missouri vs Iowa; Thrilling Insight Bowl

The Iowa Hawkeyes were on a 4 game losing streak, including a defeat at the hands of 3-9 Minnesota, so when Missouri started to rally back, take the lead, and start driving into Hawkeye territory, the game looked to be over. Someone needed to step up. And Micah Hyde answered. Hyde returned an interception 72 yards for a touchdown, Marcus Coker scored 2 touchdowns and Iowa survived Missouri 27-24 to avoid a 5 game losing streak. Iowa finished their season at 8-5, while the 12th ranked Tigers dropped to 10-3. Iowa chose to receive and on the hands of Marvin McNutt's 49 yard reception, Marcus Coker was able to leap into the end zone and give Iowa a 7-0 lead. Missouri was able to put together the same kind of drive, but it ended in a field goal. Iowa led 7-3 after 1. After a sloppy Missouri drive, Marcus Coker decided to extend the Hawkeyes lead. He found a hole to the right and ran 62 yards untouched into the end zone, giving Iowa a 14-3 lead. On their next possession, Ric

NFL Update

After Week 16 many playoff bids were decided, and the playoff picture was almost set. So, let's get you updated on all the NFL News that's been going around recently. First, for all you 49ers fans Mike Singletary has been fired with one game left. Many mistakes cost the 49ers a chance at winning against St. Louis on Sunday. A win would have put the 49ers in control of their own destiny, but the loss sets up the scene for next Sunday's St. Louis at Seattle game. The Rams bested the Seahawks 20-3 earlier in the year and own the better record, at 7-8, but they would lose the tiebreaker with a loss. If the Rams win, they will most likely be facing the Saints in the first round. However, a loss will make NFL history. Since Seattle is 6-9, if they win they would claim the division title with a losing record, something never done. The 1985 Browns and 2008 Chargers won their division with 8-8 records, but it has never been awarded to a team with a 7-9 record. The AFC is

Christmas Thriller in Arizona; Win streak snapped

Dallas at Arizona The Arizona Cardinals hadn't had much of a great year, and were already out of the NFC West playoff race, so it may be deserving that they had a Merry Christmas this morning. And then they added a nice football game to go with it. Arizona squandered a 21-3 lead before rallying and winning on a 48 yard field goal by Jay Feely that barely cleared the crossbar as the Cardinals beat the Dallas Cowboys 27-26 Christmas night, adding a little more excitement to the holiday. Dallas started with the ball, but on the second play of the game a Cowboy receiver wasn't able to get open on a curl pass. The ball was thrown behind him and right to cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who intercepted the pass and took it back for 6 the other way, giving Arizona the 7-0 lead. The Cowboys got down to the Arizona 39 yard line and on 1st and 10 they were facing a Cardinals blitz. Jon Kitna was forced to throw a short pass to Roy Williams, who couldn't hold on. The

Merry Christmas; Some Nice Sporting Events to Celebrate

After all of your presents are unwrapped, electronic devices set up and your work is done, you can finally relax and have fun. But how? Here are some good sporting events to watch today. Chicago Bulls vs New York Knicks The Knicks had been powered by Amare Stoudamire's amazing performances of 9 straight 30+ point games, but since Amare's streak came to an end the Knicks have been 1-3. However, the last time these teams met Toney Douglas powered the Knicks to a 120-112 win. Derrick Rose leads a powerful Chicago offense with an electrifying drive to the hoop and running jumper, while Carlos Boozer can light up a bench or a crowd with his rebounds and putbacks, as well as dunks. Rose is amazing with ball screens so he can put up a jumper, which he is 100% capable of making. In the first quarter the two teams stayed pretty even, with New York on top 21-20 after 1, but after a few kick-outs and electrifying putbacks the Knicks led 38-29. But Chicago started executing pass

NFL Sunday Recap; Crazy finish in the Meadowlands

Philadelphia at New York Giants From one moment to another, like a flash of lightning, things dramatically changed in the Meadowlands. Before lightning (not literally) struck, New York was nursing a 31-10 lead with just 7:28 to go at home. With a win, they would gain control of their own destiny to the playoffs. The aftershock was different. Philadelphia scored 28 points in 7:28 and rallied to stun the Giants and gain control of their own destiny for the playoffs. During the rally, Michael Vick threw 2 touchdowns and ran for one, including another unexpected surprise. The game started out as a defensive battle, with New York scoring first on a Mario Manningham 35 yard touchdown catch. However Philadelphia cut the deficit to 4 early in the second quarter with a field goal, and with 8:18 in the half the score remained 7-3. But New York turned the jets on. Manningham caught a 33 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-3, then Eli Manning and co engineered another long scoring driv

Bowl Game Day 1

BYU vs UTEP One drive after another, BYU just seemed to be eating up yardage and clock, and they would finish drives with touchdown. On the UTEP side, that fate came, but not until they trailed 31-3. The end result? A victory and a nice piece of artwork for the Cougars. The Cougars took a 28 point lead early and never looked back as they beat UTEP 52-24 in the New Mexico Bowl, kicking off the bowl season with some nice offense. The reward for the W was Native American Artwork shaped into a trophy, a nice early Christmas present for BYU. UTEP QB Trevor Vittatoe had injured his ankle, and BYU wanted to take advantage of it. They loaded the box and blitzed corners and safeties to pressure Vittatoe. He didn't get used to it until BYU led 31-3. UTEP got sacked and was forced to punt early, and after a good punt return the Cougs had the momentum. They took advantage, as Cody Hoffman caught a 28 yard slant pass to set up Bryan Kariya's TD. And on their next possession UT

NBA Update

Miami vs Washington When crunch time arrives, these players haven't really shown up. Maybe it was the inexperience, but 11 wins later they were ready. And their ability not to give up paid off. The end result; 12 straight wins. LeBron James scored 32 and Dwyane Wade hit 2 free throws late to power Miami to a 95-94 win over Washington and their 12th straight win, improving their record to 21-8. Chris Bosh stepped up late as well. We pick it up with Washington leading 89-83. Joel Anthony was fouled and drained one of 2 free throws, leaving Washington with a 5 point lead, the ball and about 1:30 left. But LeBron came up big again, with a huge steal and dunk to make it a 2 point game. The Wizards took a 91-86 lead, and after some nice defense the clock had just about 30 seconds on it. But that was plenty of time for the Heat. LeBron took the ball at the top of the key. He drew Chris Bosh's defender away, leaving Bosh open. James found Bosh, who drained the 3 and cu

NBA Update

Boston vs New York (brief) 1 player has the power to turn the Knicks around, and 2 with the Celtics, and that's what has made this rivalry epic again. And the last minute and 10 seconds reinstated this rivalry between the 16-10 Knicks and the 20-4 Celtics. We pick it up with about a minute and 10 seconds left in the game. Ray Allen is wide open on the wing, and after receiving a pass, he steps back and launches up a 3. The shot drops, and Boston holds a 116-113 lead. But the Knicks wouldn't give up easily. Danilo Galinari attacked the hoop, and he made the bucket and drew the foul. 1 free throw later, the game was tied at 116. After some good defense and no points, the Celtics ended up with the ball. Paul Pierce ended up with the ball, and he stepped back and released the ball from about 17 feet away. The ball went in, and with 0.4 seconds left the C's seemed to have the win. But wait: New York had a chance. Amare Stoudamire, who had 39 points for his 9th stra

NIL Update

NFL Update The Atlanta Falcons are dominating and sitting pretty. With an 11-2 record and the ability to eek out close wins, Atlanta leads the NFC South over the New Orleans Saints. The two teams meet December 27 at the Georgia Dome on Monday Night Football. Matt Ryan has shown the ability to lead Atlanta to last second wins, as shown against Baltimore, New Orleans and San Francisco. Against the Ravens, trailing by one, Ryan found Roddy White for the GW TD in a 26-21 win. The New England Patriots are also in a good position, allowing just 10 combined points in dominating wins over the 9-4 Jets and the also 9-4 Bears. New England is 11-2 and has clinched a playoff spot, and is one win away from the division title and a first round bye. Tom Brady has led New England to dominance, and the defense has come through as well. New England intercepted a Peyton Manning pass to hold off the Colts in November, and Patrick Chung scored 2 defensive touchdowns in a Monday Night blowout of

With stellar 3rd down offense and an early 7-0 lead, the Beavers looked poised for the W and a bowl bid. But Chip Kelly and co had other plans. 4 total touchdowns from the Duck backfield powered the Quack Attack to a 3rd straight Civil War win and a bid in the BCS Title, where Cam Newton and Auburn await. The Beavs capitalized on a turnover and took a 7-0 lead, but Darron Thomas found Kenjon Barner on a wide route to make it 7-6. After Talmedge Jackson III grabbed a tipped ball, the Ducks had a 9-7 lead and the momentum. After a TD by LaMichael James, 7 more fr

Arizona State vs Arizona

If you think Kyle Brotzman (Boise State kicker) had it bad, you'd probably be right. But compared to what Alex Zendejas failed to do, Brotzman's failures is nothing. 2 blocked extra points by James Brooks sent Arizona State to a 30-29 double overtime win over Arizona, making the Sun Devils bowl eligible. However, the Sun Devils need their waiver request to be cleared by the NCAA to play in a bowl game. The game started off a defensive struggle, with Arizona's normally potent offense not able to take advantage of good field position. Arizona got to the ASU 38 and the ASU 31 in the first half, but they couldn't put points on the board. ASU strung together 2 nice drives in the first half, and they had a 6-0 halftime edge. But in the second half the Wildcats woke up. After forcing a 3 and out, Foles hit Terrence Miller for a 38 yard gain over the middle, and he connected with Juron Criner in the left corner of the end zone for 6. The Sun Devils came close to the lea

49ers vs Cardinals

Brian Westbrook came through for an NFl team; something we haven't been able to hear for 2 years. After being signed to back up the injury-prone Frank Gore, he was finally needed. Westbrook rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown while leading San Francisco to a 27-6 Monday night Football win over Arizona, keeping San Francisco right in the thick of the playoff race. Troy Smith threw a touchdown for San Francisco, while Anthony Dixon rushed for 54 yards and a score. Frank Gore dominated the game early, showing the same poise as Westbrook with 52 yards on just 5 carries. He led San Francisco to the 30 yard line, but rookie kicker Shane Andrus missed the field goal wide right, keeping the score 0-0. However, on the first offensive play for the Redbirds Derek Anderson stuffed the ball on Chris Wells' elbow, causing a fumble. San Francisco recovered, and on the first play, Michael Crabtree got a step ahead of his defender, catching a play-action pass for a TD and a 7-0 lead. B

College Football Friday

Auburn at Alabama Almost 25 minutes into the Iron Bowl, the number 2 team in the nation was about to pave the way for TCU or Boise State. Trailing 24-0 on the road against the defending champions, the situation seemed bleak. But don't fear. Cam Newton is here. And he produced. Newton led Auburn to a 28-27 win in the last 35 minutes as Auburn ended a 2 game Iron Bowl losing streak, and kept them alive for the BCS Title, which they should make with a SEC Title W over South Carolina next week. Alabama struck first, starting at the 29 and picking up short chunks of yardage to get into the red zone. On first and goal, Mark Ingram took a handoff up the middle and ran into the end zone to give Alabama a 7-0 lead. After a Tiger 3 and out, Alabama came back. At the 32 yard line, Julio Jones slipped through the secondary and caught a McElroy pass. After reaching the end zone, Alabama led 14-0. Then on their next possession, an unsportsmanlike conduct turned 4th and 19 into 4th

Thanksgiving Day Action

Again, spectators enoying turkey, cranberries and pumpkin pie had something interesting to watch. Until about 5 minutes left in the game, the Patriots-Lions game was interesting. The Saints-Cowboys game came down to the last minute. And the Jets kept another defensive struggle against the Bengals close. And in college, Texas A&M against Texas wasn't decided into the clock struck double-zeros, and Cal vs Temple proved interesting in college basketball. Lets kick off the action. Patriots at Lions At the half the New England Patriots trailed the lowly Detroit Lions, the team that had a record of 4-39 in it's last 43 games, by a touchdown. Bill Belicheck knew they needed to exploit something, and they chose Lions CB Alphonso Smith, who was picked by the Seahawks then traded to the Broncos, who dealt him to the Motor City. It turned out to be a good call. Tom Brady threw 4 TD passes, Benjarvis Green-Ellis plowed into the end zone twice as New England dominated the

NFL Recap

Colts at Patriots This game has kind of turned into an annual rivalry. Peyton Manning vs Tom Brady, 2 of the best quarterbacks in the league. But this year, a new person; out of D-II Chadron State stepped up to the task. Danny Woodhead scored on an amazing, cutback 36 yard touchdown, then made a great tackle that drew even more applause on the ensuing kickoff. That touchdown run; and a late interception, lifted the Patriots to a 31-28 win and an 8-2 record. The Colts started with the ball, but just as Indy was driving, Brandon Meriweather closed in on a pass over the middle, intercepted it and returned it to the Colts 39. 3 plays later Tom Brady hit Wes Welker for a 22 yard score, and New England led 7-0. After a Colts punt, Tom Brady got to work again. Brady led a 15 play, 87 yard drive, and although he fumbled at the 3 yard line, receiver Wes Welker recovered, another big play from the wideout. On the next play Brady hit tight end Aaron Hernandez for a score, and the Pats

College Football Recap

Arkansas at Mississippi State Ryan Mallett and Arkansas are kind of used to these big games. So when them and 21st ranked Mississippi State were sent into double-overtime, the Razorbacks were ready. Knile Davis rushed for 187 yards and 2 scores, Mallett fired 3 TD's as Arkansas survived Mississippi State to set up a huge match-up between LSU and Arkansas. Arkansas got the ball first, but they failed to make something happen. Then Mississippi State got a chance, and they struck. Chris Relf hit Brandon Henderson for a 29 yard pass completion, then he ran for a TD. However, once Knile Davis got another chance, he succeeded. He found a hole, and took it. Davis scored, and that tied the game up at 7. Then the Razorbacks got a stop, and the momentum continued to live with Arkansas. Then Davis took over again, gaining 40 yards and setting up a 4th and 1. Mallett hit D.J Williams for a 5 yard gain, then he fired a 25 yard scoring strike to Williams. Mississippi State took

NIT Season Tip-Off Marathon

Finally! After a wait of over 7 months, college basketball is finally back. And from Butler to San Diego State to the Uconn women, we have some surprises. #18 Butler at Louisville The Butler Bulldogs came into the KFC Yum! Center expecting a team who can only shoot the three and pass well. But that's not what they saw. The Cardinals were aggressive, and when they saw open lanes, they took the lanes for easy buckets. When they didn't, they passed the ball around for 3 pointers. And Louisville was passing well. They had 18 assists, and that's because they spread the floor and drew double-teams to try to find the open man. When the bench players came in they stepped up and played to that level, too. The Louisville bench outscored the Butler bench 36-16. When Louisville is aggressive and on from beyond the arc, these Cardinals are unstoppable. Maybe they weren't perfect against Butler, but they were good enough for an 88-73 win to open up the KFC Yum! Center. Ea

NFL Recap

Texans at Jaguars Mike Thomas wasn't even a receiver on the final play. He was really just a decoy trying to erase one of the Texan players. But when Glover Quin batted the ball into Thomas' hands, he was fine with that. Thomas caught the pass and ran a yard into the end zone to win the game for Jacksonville as the Jags avoided a 14 point rally and improved to 5-4. Maurice Jones-Drew scored 2 touchdowns for the Jaguars. On the game's opening drive the Jaguars used a mix of runs and passes to get down to the 20 yard line, where Josh Scobee would boot a 38 yard field goal. Matt Schaub and the Texans had the same kind of success, with passing setting up a 24 yard field goal. But after 2 punts, Jacksonville came back. Maurice Jones-Drew would freeze and run, just go, it didn't matter. The end result of the drive was a MJD touchdown that put the Jags on top 10-3. The Jaguars got great field position after just a 20 yard punt by Houston, and Maurice Jones-Drew took a

College Football Recap

Iowa vs Northwestern In a game where Northwestern has had so much success, rallying from double-digit deficits and playing great defense, this game appeared different. Iowa was shutting down Dan Persa and Northwestern and the Hawkeyes held a 17-7 lead in the middle of the fourth quarter. But in this situation, Dan Persa came up big. Persa scored 3 total touchdowns and led Northwestern 91 yards on the final drive as Northwestern rallied for their second straight win against a ranked Iowa team. Ricky Stanzi led Iowa into Northwestern territory, but his desperation heave was knocked down with 6 seconds to end the game. The Wildcats struck first, with Dan Persa leading a 62 yard scoring drive and punching the ball in to give Northwestern a 7-0 first quarter lead. And just like they did in other games against the Hawkeyes, they shut down the Iowa offense, allowing only a field goal with 24 seconds left in the half. Northwestern led 7-3 at halftime. But on the opening second half dr
