Missouri vs Iowa; Thrilling Insight Bowl

The Iowa Hawkeyes were on a 4 game losing streak, including a defeat at the hands of 3-9 Minnesota, so when Missouri started to rally back, take the lead, and start driving into Hawkeye territory, the game looked to be over. Someone needed to step up.

And Micah Hyde answered.

Hyde returned an interception 72 yards for a touchdown, Marcus Coker scored 2 touchdowns and Iowa survived Missouri 27-24 to avoid a 5 game losing streak. Iowa finished their season at 8-5, while the 12th ranked Tigers dropped to 10-3.

Iowa chose to receive and on the hands of Marvin McNutt's 49 yard reception, Marcus Coker was able to leap into the end zone and give Iowa a 7-0 lead. Missouri was able to put together the same kind of drive, but it ended in a field goal. Iowa led 7-3 after 1.

After a sloppy Missouri drive, Marcus Coker decided to extend the Hawkeyes lead. He found a hole to the right and ran 62 yards untouched into the end zone, giving Iowa a 14-3 lead. On their next possession, Ricky Stanzi found WR Don Nordmann for a 38 yard gain, setting up another field goal. Midway through the second, Iowa led 17-3.

However, Missouri wouldn't go away without a fight, converting a 3rd down deep in their own territory and then Henry Josey running into the end zone. Missouri threatened to tie the score, but an interception kept the score at 17-10.

Missouri got the ball first in the second half, but they couldn't score. A 35 yard run by Marcus Coker on Iowa's next possession helped Iowa get into field goal range, where Michael Meyer drilled a 21 yard kick. But the 2 possession lead didn't last long, for 3 receptions by Michael Egnew set up Blaine Gabbert's 7 yard TD scramble. The game was now a 3 point game.

Iowa's next possession seemed headed the right way before Kevin Rutland intercepted a deep pass and returned it 25 yards. Before you knew it, Egnew had another catch, this time a touchdown. After 3 quarters, Missouri was in control.

Iowa's first 2 fourth quarter drives started well, with one ending in Missouri territory and the other going well until an interception. And soon, Missouri was 38 yards away from the end zone and sealing the game. Until Micah Hyde stepped up.

Gabbert was on the move and trying to force a pass on 3rd and 2, and Hyde caught the pass. He cut back to the other side of the field, making a juke move, getting a block and racing 72 yards down the sideline to give Iowa the lead.

Missouri got into Iowa territory, with a 4th and 6 coming up. Gabbert threw a pass to T.J Moe, and it was originally ruled a 1st down at the Iowa 33. But the play was reviewed, and the refs concluded that he didn't catch the pass.

On Iowa's next drive, Marcus Coker ran for 17 yards on 3 carries, setting up 3rd and 3. And Stanzi, who had thrown 2 interceptions already, hit Allen Reisner for a 39 yard gain to the one. Iowa kneeled and had the Insight Bowl, ending a disappointing season on the right note.

Other news: Joe Webb ran for a touchdown, making 2 jukes on the way and helping Minnesota upset Philadelphia 24-14 in a rare Tuesday night game.

Russell Wilson threw 2 touchdowns as North Carolina State upset West Virginia 23-7 to win the Champs Sports Bowl.
