Giants take over 1st place

San Francisco knew they needed to win to get in control of their own destiny. They needed to win to take 1st place in the NL West.

Jonathan Sanchez, Aubrey Huff, Buster Posey, Jose Gullien and the rest of the Giants realized that.

Sanchez struck out 12 and allowed just 4 hits in 7 innings as the Giants dominated the Dodgers to take the series 2-1, and more importantly, the NL West division lead.

A throwing error by Juan Uribe gave Los Angeles the early 1-0 lead, but a triple by Aubrey Huff and a double by Buster Posey evened the score at 1. In the third, with 2 runners on, Aubrey Huff came up.

Huff took a slider over the Levis Landing wall and the Giants took a 4-1 lead, and then Buster Posey followed with a solo homer to give SF a 5-1 lead. The next inning, SF loaded the bases, then Freddy Sanchez walked in a run. After 4 innings, the Giants had a 5 run cushion.

Russ Mitchell homered for the Dodgers in the top of the fifth, but the value from that blast was taken away when Jose Gullien hit a 2 run homer. In the eighth, Freddy Sanchez hit a 2 run double.

Jonathan Sanchez had control of his pitches, he mixed his pitches up and he hit the right spots for San Francisco. He allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, 4 hits, and he struck out a career high 12 batters.

Chris Ray got the save for San Fran after a perfect 9th.

The Giants play the Brewers next, with Madison Bumgardner at the helm tonight. The Padres, who are 0.5 games back of the NL West lead, play the Cardinals.
