Saints vs Vikings; Steal of home

Drew Brees completed 27 out of 36 passes for 237 yards and a TD as the Saints beat the Vikings 14-9. Although both defense did well, kicking and catching the football (I know) were issues for the Saints.

Drew Brees and the Saints had a great first drive. Brees found his men at the right time, he executed perfectly and the result was a 29 yard score on a stop and go route to Devery Henderson.

No one could score until Ryan Longwell hit a 41 yarder with 5:28 in the second, and the Vikings got the ball back. But Brett Favre threw a terrible pass, and Jonathan Vilma picked it off. However, Garrett Hartley missed a 46 yard kick, and it was still 7-3.

With the momentum on their side, Brett Favre and Visanthe Shiancoe came up huge. Shaincoe caught 2 straight passes for 53 yards and a touchdown, and even though the PAT was blocked, Minnesota led 9-7.

But in the third, that would change. Drew Brees completed 3 passes for 38 yards, and the Saints got a lot out of Pierre Thomas. Thomas scored from the one, and the Saints had the lead.

Minnesota and New Orleans then just couldn't get it going. They had a couple of third down passes that were questionable, and a dropped pass in the end zone resulted in a 32 yard field goal attempt by Garrett Hartley, which he missed wide left.

Greg Camarillo caught a pass in New Orleans territory for 29 yards, but a holding and a -3 yard pass pushed Minnesota back. Greg Lewis caught a 12 yard pass, but it wasn't enough. Then, Drew Brees worked the short pass, Pierre Thomas ran out the clock and Lombardi Gras continued!

Rockie speedster steals home (brief)
The pitcher was looking down. The 3rd baseman was playing back. The catcher was thinking about what pitch should be thrown next. All this adds up to...

A steal of home.

With all that happening, Chris Nelson made a break for home and scored easily, giving the Rockies the winning run. Colorado stayed 2 and a half games behind the Giants.

All the commotion when Nelson took off caused pitcher Nick Masset to look to second. Nothing was happening there, so he looked at home plate. He saw Nelson stealing it, and Nelson getting the game-winning run for Colorado.

All this because of a steal of home.

Giants vs Padres (brief)
Matt Cain worked 8 innings of 5 hit, 3 run baseball as the Giants cut the Padres division lead to 1 game. In his first 8 innings he only allowed 3 hits and 1 run, and he struck out 8. Here are his 3 keys to success:

3 Get people swinging
2 Mix up pitches
1 Hit corners

Cain did all 3 of these.
