Red Sox vs. Twins; Target Field Opener

The Minnesota Twins had high expectations for their home opener, perhaps too high, as the Twins coaching staff thought.

There was no need to worry.

Carl Pavano allowed 1 run in six innings and got the first ever win at Target Field, Jason Kubel homered as the Twins defeated the Red Sox 5-2 in the opener at Target Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. Jon Rauch recorded the first save at Target Field and his fifth of the year.

Marco Scutaro singled, but he was caught stealing second and the Twins allowed no runs. Orlando Hudson had the first Twins hit in stadium history, and Michael Cuddeyer drove in Denard Span for the first run in stadium history. Jason Kubel hit a single over first baseman Kevin Youkillis' head and the Twins took a 2-0 lead.

Pavano struck out David Ortiz and 2 grounders ended the inning, and Nick Punto singled, stole second, then scored on Joe Mauer's double. Pavano struck one out and forced 2 more to fly out, but the Twins couldn't score and the Twins led 3-0 after 3.

Kevin Youkillis doubled and scored on David Ortiz's double, but 2 groundouts ended the inning. Denard Span walked, then stole second and scored on Joe Mauer's single over second base (literally). Carl Pavano struck 2 out and the Twins held their 4-1 lead.

Jon Lester, a dominating pitcher if he gets ahead of the count, struck one out and allowed 0 runs, but Carl Pavano made a great barehanded out and forced 3 straight grounders. Denard Span stole his second base, but Scott Atchinson allowed 0 runs. Brian Duensing struck out 2 and kept the Red Sox at 1 run. Then came another first.

Jason Kubel injured his shin on the fourth pitch of his at bat, but he hit a 2-2 pitch off Atchinson for the first ever home run at Target Field. He hit it to right. Jeremy Hermida doubled and advanced to third on a Marco Scutaro single. He scored on a sac fly, but Victor Martinez ended the inning with a double-play.

The Twins didn't score, but a great running catch by Nick Punto made the 2nd out and a fly ball to right ended the game. Minnesota improved to 6-2 while Boston dropped to 3-4.

Target Field seats 39,715 and has 54 suites, a giant Gold Glove 550 feet away on Gate 34, real grass and a very beautiful park. It looks like it could be the ballpark of the future!

Nelson Cruz hit a 2 run shot to left as the Texas Rangers held off the struggling Cleveland Indians 4-2 in 10 innings. The homer was Cruz's fifth of the year. The Rangers are now 4-3 while the Indians are 2-5 and have lost 4 straight, including a 6 run blown lead in Detroit yesterday.

Cliff Pennington homer, 2 run Gabe Gross RBI single helps A's blank Mariners 4-0.
Will Venable scored 4 runs, Tony Gwynn hit a 2 run double and scored on a grounder as the Padres scored 10 4th inning runs to beat the Braves 17-2.
Xavier Nady, Aramis Ramirez, and Jeff Baker all homered, Ryan Dempster picked up a win as the Cubs won their home opener 9-5 over the Brewers.
Scott Rolen hit 2 homers and drove in the game-winning run, Orlando Cabrera had a 2 run homer as the Reds beat the Marlins 6-5 in 10 innings.
Andruw Jones homered twice, Mark Teahen hit the game-tying homer in the 9th inning and the game winning RBI triple in the 11th as the White Sox beat the Blue Jays 8-7.
Bengie Molina homered and tied the Giants career catcher RBI mark (263) as the Giants beat the Pirates 9-3.
