Braves vs. Giants

When the San Francisco Giants returned the same lineup as the year before and what seemed like no extra talent, it looked like another down year.

    Or did it?

Edgar Renteria hit a game-tying homer in the ninth, Aaron Rowand hit a walk-off single in the 13th and the Giants held off the Braves 5-4 in 13 innings. The Giants are now 4-0.

After the Braves got runners on 1st and 2nd, Jonathan Sanchez struck out 2 Braves and a fly out by Troy Glaus ended the inning.  But 3 straight groundouts ended the inning for the Giants. Jonathan Sanchez struck out 2 more and ended the inning scoreless, but 2 flyouts and 1 groundout ended the inning.

Melky Cabrera doubled to center, and soon the Braves had runners on 3rd and second. Troy Glaus hit an infield RBI single, and Matt Diaz got a run in with an infield single. Sanchez ended the inning with his 5th K, but the next 3 Giants went down, as no Giants got on base at their first at bat.

2 groundouts and a K ended the fourth inning, but an Edgar Renteria single was wasted by a double-play by Pablo Sandoval. Diaz hit another RBI single, but a double play by Omar Infante ended the inning. 3 more outs and Tim Hudson's second K ended the 5th inning.

Brandon Medders ended the top of the sixth with 2 strikeouts and 3 outs, but Nate Schierholtz ended the inning with a double play. 18 batters in 6 innings. 3 batters every inning. Wow. Guillermo Moto got a K and didn't allow any runs, but Aaron Rowand singled and Edgar Renteria doubled. Groundouts by Pablo Sandoval and Aubrey Huff scored 2 runs for the Giants.

Troy Glaus singled and advanced to 3rd, and 2 walks set the Braves up in bases loaded position. A walk scored another run for Atlanta, but a groundout and a strikeout kept the score at 4-2. 2 fly outs and 1 strikeout ended the inning with the score at 4-2.

Martin Prado walked, but he was caught stealing second. The Giants allowed no runs, and they put themselves in a position to win. Eugenio Velez hit a double to deep left-center, but Aaron Rowand struck out. Then Edgar Renteria (2-17 against closer Billy Wagner) hit a 1-2 pitch 390 feet for a homer. But 2 pop outs to third sent the game into extra innings.

2 groundouts and a K ended the top of the 10th for Brian Wilson, but Travis Ishikawa struck out and Josh Bowker grounded out into a double play to end the inning. Wilson got 2 quick outs, but the Braves quickly loaded the bases. But Troy Glaus flied out to right, ending the top of the 11th.

Juan Uribe singled and advanced to second on a bunt, but Peter Moylan ended the inning with 2 K's. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout ended the top of the 12th tied at 4. Pablo Sandoval doubled and a bunt advanced him to third, but a groundout and a strikeout ended the inning. Brian McCann got to third on a fly out, but another flyout kept the score at 4.

Juan Uribe walked, but their were still 2 outs. He stole second, and Brian McCann's throw went into center field, so Uribe stole third. But on Aaron Rowand's follow through, McCann said the bat hit him. The call was not made, and Rowand hit a single to shortstop and Uribe scored, and the Giants stayed perfect in the longest game of the year (4:03, 13 innings).
