Lakers vs. Celtics; Game 3; Stephen Strasburg's debut

Lakers vs. Celtics
When the Lakers need someone to help their team, who do they turn to? Kobe Bryant. But with Kobe shut down, who would they turn to next?

Derek Fisher.

Fisher scored 11 in the fourth quarter, including a 3 point play with 3 Celtics charging at him while Fisher was attempting a layup. The Lakers won 91-84.

Game 4 is Thursday night in Boston.

Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett were picking apart LA early, but Kobe and the Lakers got back on track. LA finished the quarter on a 10-1 run, and Lamar Odom converted a 3 point play at the buzzer of the quarter.

The Lakers kept knocking down jumpers, and they extended their run to 32-8 by taking a 37-20 lead. But Boston fought their way back, down just 52-40 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Celtics came out on a 7-2 run, and they cut the deficit to 6, but they couldn't stop Kobe. He scored 9 of LA's 15 points, and he looked to be a threat in the 4th quarter.

But in the fourth, Boston came back. With 9:45 in the fourth, the score was 68-67. But then, it was Derek Fisher time.

Fisher drove through the Celtics and scored a basket. He got some buckets down low. Boston hung in there, but the Lakers were still clinging to a 2 point lead. But then Fisher nailed 19 and 16 footers, and LA led 76-70.

However, it wasn't over. Glen Davis converted a 3 point play, and it was a 3 point game. But Fisher knocked down another 16 footer. But Paul Pierce hit a 3, and it was 78-76.

Lamar Odom then scored a driving layup, and soon LA had an 84-80 lead. Next, on a 3 on 1 fast break, Derek Fisher got the ball over all 3 Celtics, drew the foul, and the ball went in. LA took an 87-80 lead, and they won the game 91-84.

Stats: Kobe, 29 points; Kevin Garnett, 25 points; Derek Fisher, 16 points; Paul Pierce, 15 points.

Stephen Strasburg's debut
Stephen Strasburg was expected to be a great pitcher from the start. But to finish with an amazing debut like this? No.

Strasburg finished with 14 strikeouts, and he got each batter on a K at least once. His nasty curveballs hit the inside corner, his dirty sinkers cut down low so the batter couldn't hit it, and his fastballs were just too fast.

The Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2, and Strasburg got the win. The only 2 runs for Pittsburgh were off of a 2 run homer by Delwyn Young in the fourth.

Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo shot in the first, then Dunn hit a 2 run jack to right to give Strasburg the lead. Josh Willingham followed with a homer to left, and the Nats led 4-2.

Strasburg struck out his last 7 batters.

Around the MLB
Jeff Niemann threw a no-no thru 5 and 1/3 innings, and he finished with a 2-hitter and a complete game to improve to 6-0.
Matt Cain threw a 7-hitter, and he shut down the Reds in a hitters ballpark as the Giants beat the Reds 3-0.
Kevin Slowey was perfect through 4 and 1/3 innings (13 batters), and he went 7 shutout innings in the Twins 7-3 win over the Royals.
Carlos Lee singled in the GW run in the ninth for the Astros as Houston rallied from down 3-0 to beat the Rockies.
