1 seed falls: 2OT game boosts 2 seed

Butler vs Pitt
Players were jumping around, laughing, having more fun then they've ever had in their lives. Even the coach was having that kind of fun. But on the other side, it was a different story.

A free throw from Matt Howard with 0.8 seconds left and 30 points from Shelvin Mack sent Butler into the Sweet 16 an sent Pitt packing much earlier than they expected.

Early on, Matt Howard, Shelvin Mack, Shawn Vanzant and Zach Hahn each hit 3's to give Butler a 30-18 lead. But Pittsburgh wasn't done, and they went on an 11-0 run to make it a one point game, only to watch Mack pull up from the top of the key and send a 3 down the drainage pipes. The Bulldogs led 38-30 at the half.

However, the Panthers clawed back and took a 57-54 lead in the second half, and most basketball fans thought the game was under their belt. But Mack made perhaps his most amazing 3 yet, which went in, out, off the glass and in to tie the game.

Unfortunately for Butler Gilbert Brown of Pitt was fouled while taking a 3 pointer and made all 3 free throws. The Panthers relaxed in their chairs again, only for about 5 seconds. Mack pulled up and drilled another 3 to tie the game.

After Pittsurgh failed to score Matt Howard put in a layup, then the Dawgs put in 2 foul shots. Butler was up 64-60 late and looking good until Pitt stormed back and grabbed a 69-68 lead with 10 seconds to go.

For some reason, Shawn Vanzant took the ball up instead of Mack, who already had 30 points. But Vanzant took care of that issue by driving to the hoop and sending a pass to Andrew Smith over his shoulder. Smith snatched the pass and put in in the hoop to give Butler a 1 point lead, but Shelvin Mack fouled Gilbert Brown with 1.4 seconds left. Brown made the first to tie the game at 70.

Unfortunately for Pitt, he couldn't make the second, and for some strange reason Nasir Robinson fouled Matt Howard on the rebound, a foul that was even more bonehead then the one that tied the game. Howard made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second to give Butler a shocking 71-70 upset over the top seeded Panthers.

Butler will face Wisconsin in the Sweet 16.

Temple vs San Diego State
Billy White and Kawhi Leanord scored 16 as San Diego State beat Temple 71-64 in double overtime to earn a bid to the Sweet 16, where they will face the Connecticut Huskies.

The Aztecs led by as much as 11 early and they led 52-45 late in the game, but a couple big buckets by Lavoy Allen helped tie the game. San Diego State missed a shot at the buzzer, which sent the game into OT.

In the first overtime Temple took control early, with a running 3 pointer by Juan Fernandez giving them a 57-54 lead, but SDSU would get back at the Owls. Kawhi Leanord made only 1 of 2 free throws with about 2 minutes left in OT, but a lane violation on Temple changed that to 2 for 2. Malcolm Thomas converted a 3 point play later in the period to send the game into double OT.

In double overtime Kawhi Leanord and the Aztecs started well, and they would not give their lead up. A huge block by Malcolm Thomas sealed the deal and sent SDSU to Anahiem, about an hour and a half away from San Diego.
