San Francisco at Philadelphia: Lincecum Dominates, Beltran makes Debut in Giants Win

Carlos Beltran was expected to jump right in and make a contribution at the plate.

Instead, he went to defense and the advice column.

Beltran made a sliding catch and gave Pablo Sandoval some good advice (which he used), Tim Lincecum pitched six shutout innings, and the Giants beat the Phillies 4-1.

Beltran told Sandoval to focus on hitting to the opposite field instead of pulling the ball, and what do you know: Sandoval went deep opposite-field.

Nate Schierholtz hit an RBI single, and two scored on Michael Martinez's error. Philadelphia scored on a Chase Utley double in the seventh.

In the first, Beltran got his first at-bat as a Giant. He didn't get a hit, and he got out all four times he came to the plate, but Sandoval didn't.

Although Sandoval only had one hit on the day, he made it count. In the second, Sandoval hit an outside breaking ball into the first row in left field.

Lincecum needed that run badly, because he was on. Lincecum got out of many jams, striking Ryan Howard out with a runner on third and two out.

He got Utley with runners on twice, one on a high fastball that was a called strike, and one on a change-up in the dirt. Lincecum's curveball and change-up were working.

Like always, almost every batter Lincecum struck out was on a swinging strike, that was obviously not a strike. He got Carlos Ruiz, Kyle Kendrick, and Dominic Brown to strike out as well.

In the seventh, with Lincecum about to leave because of his pitch count, the Giants gave the 'pen some extra support.

Nate Schierholtz walked, then Chris Stewart singled, and Schierholtz got to third. The next batter was Aaron Rowand, who hit a grounder to Michael Martinez.

Martinez bobbled the ball, then threw high to Ryan Howard. Rowand got to second, and with Howard jogging to the ball, Chris Stewart was able to score.

Ramon Ramirez gave up a run, but the Giants escaped that, as Jeremy Affeldt got Ryan Howard to ground out weakly. In the ninth, Wilson was on the mound.

He got Carlos Ruiz swinging at a high fastball, and then he gave up a double and a fly out, which Ross Gload got to third on. The next batter was Martinez, who was retired on a foul tip.

The Giants lead the D-Backs by 4 games in the Nl West, as do the Hillies with the Braves. Philadelphia hosts Pittsburgh, while San Francisco Is in Cincinnati.
