Baseball Doubleheader: Angels' Santana Throws No-Hitter; Giants Acquire Beltran from Mets, Beat Phils

Ervin Santana was the odd man out in the Angels rotation.

You have Jered Weaver, owner of the league's lowest ERA. Dan Haren, the workhorse who gives you too many wins.

And now, we can welcome Ervin Santana to that category.

Santana no-hit the Cleveland Indians Wednesday afternoon, striking out 10 batters in a 3-1 victory. Santana gave up an unearned run, but nothing else.

In the ninth inning, Ervin Santana recorded a strikeout, groundout, and flyout. His last K was on a 94 mph fastball on the outside corner, getting Travis Buck.

Ezquillel Cabrera came up, looking to end the gem, but he grounded out to second on a slider. Santana was one out away, but he had to face Michael Brantley.

However, Brantley induced weak contact on a fly ball to center field, and Santana's last outside fastball gave him the no-hitter.

Ervin Santana started the year 3-8, but he has gotten the win in his last three decisions. Santana took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his last start against Baltimore.

In the eighth, Santana struck out three batters, but that doesn't mean his stuff wasn't working all game. His change-up was sinking so quickly it was nearly impossible to hit.

Although his slider and fastball were hittable, Santana forced many ground balls and a couple fly balls. In the sixth, Howie Kendrick saved the no-hitter.

Jason Kipnis hit a ground ball, but Kendrick dove for the ball, turned around, and threw Kipnis out from his knees.

Santana's no-hitter was the first since 1990 for the Angels, and the first solo no-hitter since 1984 for Los Angeles. It was the first in the MLB since Justin Verlander in early May.

San Francisco Giants News
Outfielder Carlos Beltran was dealt from the New York Mets to San Francisco, where he will join the team in Philadelphia for the final game of the series on Thursday night. Belt ran was traded for pitching prospect Zachary Wheeler. Beltran looks to be the bat the Giants need, as he would lead the Giants in all four offensive categories. The Giants, coming off a 2-1 win at Citizen's Bank Park last night, will likely play Beltran, the surging Nate Schierholtz, and Aaron Rowand, who has two homers and a triple in his last three games.
