Giants Baseball: Brandon Belt Powers Giants to Victory; Can Belt Become the New Buster Posey?

Giants fans all know the story of Buster Posey.

The kid from Leesburg, Georgia, was drafted out of Florida State, and made his debut in 2009. In 17 at-bats, he had just two hits (a .118 batting average).

But in 2010, his second time at the helm, he hit .305, won NL Rookie of the Year, and led the Giants to a World Series title.

See a little of the same in Brandon Belt?

Belt struggled early this year, was sent down to the minors, came back, continued his struggles, then got hit on the wrist with a pitch.

After lots of rehab time (where he was great in Triple-AAA), it became clear to Brian Sabean that the real Brandon Belt was in Triple-AAA, desperate to go to the Majors.

In his first start back, Belt made a huge impression on Giants fans. He hit an inside changeup over Levi's Landing to give the Giants a 1-0 lead last night, then hit a tiebreaking, two-run double down the line as the Giants took a 5-3 lead.

Belt's big game couldn't have come at a better time for the Giants. Aubrey Huff is hitting .232 and is playing horribly, and Belt looks to be ready.

The Rookie of the Year Award may be out of the question, due to Belt's early struggles, but his production is unlimited. Belt will likely get the start at first base today against the Dodgers.

Belt tore up Triple-AAA pitching with the Fresno Grizzlies, hitting seven homers and knocking in 29 RBI's in just 42 games. If Belt continues his success, this may be it for Huff.

When Belt started the year at first, Huff moved to right field, but now, with Andres Torres and Nate Schierholtz playing so well, Huff might have to play left.

Currently, Cody Ross resides in left. So far, Ross hasn't played like the 2010 postseason hero, as he's popped up a lot. But neither has Huff, who has not succeeded with RISP.

If Belt keeps hitting baseballs to all fields, flashing his glove at first base, and powering the Giants to victory, this might be it for Aubrey Huff, or Cody Ross.

The edge would likely go to Ross, who is playing better than Huff is this year.

If Belt keeps playing like the way he is right now, and considering how much better his defense is, it seems like he's a lock for first base.

So, in the absence of Buster Posey and in some hard injury times for the Giants, you'll be hearing (and seeing) Fear the Beard, Kung Fu Panda, and, the new cheer.

"Belt! Belt! Belt!"
