College Basketball Update

Duke at Virginia Tech (brief)
Is it just me, or does the number one team lose often?

Jeff Allen scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Virginia Tech rallied from down 6 to beat Duke and increase their NCAA Tournament chances. The Hokies got double digit scoring from every starter.

The game went back and forth, with Virginia Tech leading 42-37 early in the half but a 14-3 run by Duke changing the score to a 6 point lead for the Blue Devils. With only 6:34 left Duke led 53-47.

But the Hokies were determined to pick up a quality win, and a 3 by Jeff Allen and Terrell Bell tied the game at 55. 2 free throws by Bell gave VT the lead, and another layup by Allen finished off the 12-2 run.

Duke cut the lead in half, only to watch Malcolm Delaney make a 3 pointer and give Virginia Tech a 62-57 lead. Duke made it 62-60, but a free throw by Jeff Allen and a Duke turnover sealed the 64-60 upset.

Syracuse at Georgetown (brief)
Chris Wright sure makes a big difference for Georgetown.

Georgetown only shot 36 percent and turned the ball over 16 times as Syracuse stunned the Hoyas 58-51. It was the second straight loss for Georgetown, the first a 58-46 loss to Cincinnati where Chris Wright got hurt.

Scoop Jardine gave the Orange an early cushion, and 7 late first half points gave Syracuse a 37-25 lead late. But Georgetown went on a 20-6 run and took the lead, only to watch Scoop Jardine pour 7 points on Georgetown and take a 54-46 lead.

However, the Hoyas came back and cut the deficit to 54-51, until sloppy play took over. 2 turnovers and 2 missed 3 pointers cost Georgetown a chance at winning, as the Orange escaped with a 58-51 triumph.
