Giants vs Padres
The Giants needed to win. They needed to beat the Padres. They needed to stay in this race. And with the help of Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval, they stayed 2 and a half games behind.

Sandoval hit a solo homer in the seventh inning, and Juan Uribe knocked in Buster Posey for the GW run. The Giants beat the Padres 3-2 in 11 innings.

Mat Latos (who threw a one-hitter against SF in May) dominated the first 6 innings, but he allowed a leadoff homer to Pablo Sandoval in the seventh. Since the Padres have a good bullpen, they took out Latos.

In the eighth, Mike Fontenot hit a leadoff single, and Aubrey Huff got him to third on a double. Fontenot scored on Pat Burrell's groundout. In the ninth, the Giants didn't score, and neither did the Padres, who stranded 16 runners in the game, including 9 in the final 4 innings.

In the tenth, both teams didn't score, and it went into the 11th. In the top of the 11th, the Padres got runners on the corners with 1 out, but Santiago Casilla recorded a strikeout and he got Tony Gwynn Jr to line out to center. Then the Giants were up.

Buster Posey hit the ball to Jerry Hairston Junior, and it bounced off his leg and went into left-center field, giving Posey a free base. Sandoval was intentionally walked, and that brought up Juan Uribe.

Uribe hit the first pitch into right field, knocking in Posey and improving the Giants to 67-51. San Francisco is 2 and a half games behind the Padres, who are 68-47.

Yankees vs Royals (brief)
Alex Rodriguez had trouble hitting his 600th homer. It took him 12 games. Then it took him 5 more to hit 601.

It took 3 at-bats to hit 3 more.

Rodriguez hit 3 homers as the Yankees beat the Royals 8-3 to stay in first place. In the 6th
, the Yankees had 2 straight homers and 3 homers in 4 at-bats. That put the Yankees ahead 4-1.

Kansas City rallied to make it 4-3, but 2 2 run homers gave the Yanks an 8-3 win. A-Rod
knocked in 5 runs.
