A's vs Rays; Tigers vs Yankees

A's vs Rays
In a game featuring the 2 streakiest teams in Major League baseball, it also was a huge one for Tampa Bay. And the A's knew that. So Coco Crisp and Cliff Pennington stepped up.

Crisp robbed Matt Joyce of a home run in the sixth, and Cliff Pennington hit a 2 run double as the A's beat the Rays 4-3. The A's are now 60-60.

The A's took a 1-0 lead on Kurt Suzuki's groundout, and Coco Crisp scored. But the Rays came back on the long ball, as Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria went deep. Matt Joyce hit one deep too, but Coco Crisp sprinted to the fence, jumped up and robbed Joyce of a homer.

When the A's were up, they did damage. Andy Sonnastine walked 2 batters, and allowed a hit to Jack Cust. Rajai Davis grounded out to the pitcher, and he knocked in a run. With 2 outs, Cliff Pennington came up to bat.

He hit a pitch right to the deepest corner in right field, getting him to second base and knocking in 2 runs. The A's held a 4-3 lead.

Then, Trevor Cahill dominated. He allowed a hit to lead off the seventh, but then he fielded a grounder, and helped the A's turn a double play. He got out of the seventh, and he struck out Evan Longoria on a pitch that hit the outside corner.

Jerry Blevins came in to finish the game, and he didn't strike anyone out, but he ended the game. The Yankees got a 1 game division lead because of the Rays loss. Jeremy Hellickson pitches against Vin Mazzaro tomorrow.

Tigers vs Yankees (brief)
Robinson Cano knocked in 3 runs and scored 3 times, Austin Kearns hit a 2 run double, Derek Jeter hit a 2 run triple and the Yankees beat the Tigers 11-5. New York took the final 3 games of the series.

The Yankees, who are now 75-46, scored 9 runs in the sixth. Phil Hughes shook off a shaky start to retire 11 straight batters to finish his 6 inning outing. Hughes improved to 15-5, while Rick Porcello, who pitched 3.1 no-hit innings, was charged with the loss.

The Tigers, who have lost 25 of their last 35, dropped out of a tight AL Central race to 12 games behind the Twins and Joe Mauer, who lead the division.

The Yankees are preparing for a 3 game series against the Mariners, while the Tigers play the Indians next.

MLB News: Ted Lilly pitched a CG, 2-hit shutout as the Dodgers beat the Rockies 2-0. Lilly retired 19 straight batters at one point. Since Lilly has joined LA, he has regained control of his pitches. The Dodgers are 4-0 when Lilly pitches.
