World Cup Final: Cup Awards

By looking at the Spaniards, you would think that they would be a power soccer country like Italy or Brazil. Come to think of it, you would think that they would have at least a championship.

But they didn't. Until now.

Andres Iniesta scored in the 116th minute as Spain won their first ever World Cup final. The Netherlands lost their 3rd World Cup final.

Spain had a chance early on, but Dutch goalie Maarten Steklenberg made a diving save. After that, a flurry of yellow cards began to come on, but no players were thrown out.

No one got a good chance for the rest of the first half, and the score was 0-0. Then, early in the second half, Holland got a breakaway. However, Iker Casillas deflected Arjen Robben's shot, and the score stayed 0-0.

About 8 minutes later, Spain got a good chance. But they put themselves in a tough hole, and David Villa's shot went over the net.

Spain had control of the ball for the rest of regular time, but they couldn't score. The game went into additional time tied 0-0.

Cesc Fabregas got a couple chances, but he still couldn't score. Although Spain was playing better, it looked like it would go into PK's. Until the red card happened.

Spain's Xavi was coming into the box, but John Heitenga tripped him. However, Heitenga had a yellow card, and he got thrown out for a second yellow card. Spain had the advantage for the next 12 minutes.

But even though the Spaniards had the advantage, they still couldn't score. But then, they got a chance. A good chances.

Fabregas had the ball in the box, and he passed it to Andres Iniesta. Iniesta took a shot, and it went off of Maarten Steklenberg's hand and into the net. Spain had the lead!

The Netherlands wouldn't score, so Spain became the champions. Everyone held up the golden ball trophy, starting with goalie Iker Casillas, and the Spaniards took their place in soccer
history.

Awards:
Golden Ball: Diego Forlan, Uruguay
Silver Ball: Wesley Sneijder, Netherlands
Bronze Ball: David Villa, Spain
