MLB Trades

This year, many big trades have been made. Miguel Tejada switched teams, Jorge Cantu headed south, and Matt Capps was sent north. Now, it's time to cover all the big moves, and break them down.

July 9; Cliff Lee trade
Cliff Lee was traded from the Seattle Mariners to division rival Texas. Texas also got reliever Mark Lowe, while Seattle got 1B Justin Smoak and 3 prospects.

Both teams win the deal. Texas acquired a great arm to go with 8-0 Tommy Hunter, Colby Lewis and Rich Harden. The struggling Mariners got a good 1B and 3 prospects for the future. Lee is 1-1 with 2 9 inning games pitched. In his last start, he pitching a 9 inning no-decision in an extra-inning win over Oakland.

July 29; Miguel Tejada trade
The San Diego Padres acquired Miguel Tejada from the Baltimore Orioles to add another strong bat to the lineup that leads the NL West by 3.5 games. San Diego gave up Double-A pitcher Wynn Pelzer to make the deal.

Both teams win, but San Diego gets the better end. They need Tejada to try to secure first in the NL West, and he still has a year or 2 left. Baltimore is rebuilding, but a 2-A pitcher isn't guaranteed to succeed.

July 29; Jorge Cantu trade
The Rangers acquired Jorge Cantu from the Marlins Thursday for Double-A pitchers Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. Cantu has 10 homers and has knocked in 54 RBI's, and he is batting .262.

Texas wins this deal because the Rangers get a guy who can hit homers and knock in RBI's any day, and they can probably re-sign him this winter. The Marlins get 2 young guys who can be good in the future, but hey; Florida is only 7.5 games back of Atlanta. The chase isn't over yet.

July 29; Matt Capps trade
The Nationals traded closer Matt Capps to the Minnesota Twins for gifted prospect Wilson Ramos and minor-leaguer Joe Testa. Capps has 26 saves this season, but he has struggled recently.

Both teams win the deal. Capps can fill the void that the Twins have been missing in Joe Nathan, and Wilson Ramos can become the Ivan Rodriguez of the future. The Twins are only 1.5 games back, and Capps can win some games for Minnesota.

July 30; Edwin Jackson trade
The Diamondbacks traded Edwin Jackson to the Chicago White Sox for righty Daniel Hudson and southpaw David Holmberg. Jackson, who threw a no-hitter in June, is 6-10 with a 5.16 ERA. He made the All-Star team with Detroit last year.

The Diamondbacks win the deal. Hudson got called up from Triple-A Charlotte July 10, and the White Sox won the first 2 games that he appeared in. In his second start against Seattle, Hudson allowed 5 hits in 6.2 innings. He is a stud.

July 29; Roy Oswalt trade
The Phillies acquired Roy Oswalt from Astros for J.A Happ, Anthony Gose, and Jonathan Villar. Oswalt is 6-12 this year, but that is because he gets very little run support. He has a 3.42 ERA.

The Phillies win the deal because they add a great pitcher to the staff that already has a perfect pitcher in Roy Halladay, and Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge. Oswalt will start Friday night against the Nationals.

J.A Happ has a 1-0 record and a 1.76 ERA, and he is a good pitcher. He had an arm injury, but he can win games too.
