Sharks Skate by Wings, Steal Game 3
It doesn't matter if the game is in San Jose, Los Angeles, or Detroit, the San Jose Sharks are simply amazing in overtime. Five of the team's seven wins have come in overtime, including three against LA.
The two against the Wings have still turned the tide.
San Jose got a hat trick from Devin Setoguchi and a big goal from Dan Boyle as the Sharks stole Game 3 4-3 in overtime from the Red Wings. Just like last year, San Jose leads Detroit 3-0 in the series.
Antti Niemi allowed a few goals, but he played well when San Jose needed him to. Detroit had a couple shots in the extra session that just went wide or high. Detroit had a setup similar to the one where they scored a goal in Game 2, and it worked, but Henrik Zetterburg's shot went high.
Doug Ericcson had another good chance, but he missed a shot wide left, and Tomas Holmstrom had one, but he couldn't juke Niemi and get the puck past him. Niemi made the save with his leg.
Earlier in the period, Pavel Datysuk took a backhand shot, but Niemi knocked it down. It bounced to a Detroit skater, who fired a slap shot. It was on target, but Dany Heatley dove and blocked it with his stick. Detroit had less shots during the first three periods, but they dominated the overtime.
Devin Setoguchi dominated the game, overtime and regular. He poked in a rebound during the first period, getting the Sharks a 1-0 lead, and with San Jose trailing 2-1 in the second, Setoguchi took a slow shot. Somehow, it slid past Jimmy Howard and into the right side of the goal, and the game was even.
Datysuk wasn't done yet, however. He received a pass with no defender present to stop him late in the second, and he fired a wrist shot. Niemi couldn't stop it, and the Red Wings had their lead back. It would last for a long time, but after Datysuk's goal, nothing would get by the Sharks goalie.
In the third, both goals shone. Antti Niemi wasn't going to give up another goal (even though the Red Wings got some great opportunities), and Jimmy Howard was good at making these saves. Still, whenever Howard is in the goal, it seems like he makes the hard saves and misses the easy saves.
Boyle's shot wasn't really a hard or an easy shot. It was a snap, and Howard read this. He expected the shot to go low, but Boyle tricked him and shot it high. Howard couldn't catch the puck, and San Jose had tied the game, and with only 4:08 left. Although the Sharks dominated the third period and got off 16 shots, Boyle's was the only one that found the net.
Setoguchi was called for a penalty for holding in overtime, but San Jose easily killed off the penalty. 9:21 into the period, Setoguchi got his third goal. Joe Thornton had the puck on a breakaway, and he pushed the puck forward. He lifted his skate over the defender, gained control of the puck, and passed to Setoguchi. Setoguchi shot the puck...
He scored! It went top shelf, and Jimmy Howard couldn't save it. It stayed in for a split second, but it didn't need to stay any longer. San Jose had won!
