BCS Title

At first, we all thought that this game would be Cam Newton vs the Oregon Ducks defense. We never expected anyone else to step up for the Tigers. But when it mattered most, it wasn't Cam Newton handing Auburn the win.

Michael Dyer ran for 143 yards and gains of 37 and 16 late to hand Auburn a last-second 22-19 BCS Title victory over Auburn. Cam Newton threw 2 touchdowns for Auburn and the defense forced 2 interceptions.

Oregon got the ball first and went 3 and out, but after a bad punt Auburn had good field position. They wouldn't take advantage though, with a sack forcing another punt. But they would get another chance, for a short pass intended for Kenjon Barner went off his fingertips and into Demond Washington's hands.

But again, they couldn't make it a 7-0 game. Newton overthrew a pass and it landed right in Cliff Harris' hands, and the speedy safety returned the pick to the 47. The Ducks were driving and they had the ball at the Tigers 20. But a blitz by Auburn and a misread by Josh Huff didn't go well together, and the end result was a Zac Ethridge interception.

But Auburn still couldn't get going, as a sack by Zach Clark proved costly. They had to punt and Oregon drove to the 2 yard line of Auburn. But another Ducks misread cost them 4 points, as Thomas tried to run himself but was tackled for a 6 yard loss. The Ducks got a field goal to make it 3-0.

Unfortunately for Oregon, the Tigers offense finally got going. After an interception was ruled incomplete because Cliff Harris didn't have control of the ball, Newton found former QB Kodi Burns on a post route for a 35 yard touchdown to give Auburn their first lead of the game.

And to make matters worse for Oregon, they were stuck at their own 7 yard line. But on first down they went for a risky option; the long ball. Jeff Maehl got open deep and caught a 81 yard pass. The Ducks took advantage, with LaMichael James catching a 2 yard touchdown. Oregon went for 2, and they got it to make it 11-7.

Auburn responded with a long drive, 16 plays traveling 68 yards. But on 4th and goal Newton was blitzed, and his pass to tight end Eric Smith came up short. The score was still 11-7 then, but on first down LaMichael James was stopped in the end zone for a safety. Auburn quickly got downfield, and on one play Emory Blake jogged over to the sideline before sprinting down the sidelines and catching a pass from Newton. He found the end zone and gave Auburn the halftime lead at 16-`11.

In the 3rd quarter Auburn started with the ball and they were able to get downfield. The Tigers got a field goal, but that was all the scoring for a long time, the 3rd and a lot of the 4th quarter. Oregon got to the Auburn 1, but Kenjon Barner was stuffed on 4th and goal at the 1.

Late in the game, on 4th and 5, Darron Thomas found DJ Davis for a 29 yard gain, and on 3rd and goal at the 2 LaMichael James caught a shovel pass and took it into the end zone. Down just 2 after the touchdown, Oregon decided to go for 2. On a deep crossing pattern, Thomas hit Jeff Maehl and tied the score up at 19.

Auburn got the ball at their own 25 yard line with 2:24 to play. After a 15 yard pass from Newton to Emory Blake and a 6 yard run by Michael Dyer, the play of the game came. Dyer took a handoff and found a hole to the right, only to see Eddie Pleasent close it. However, when Pleasent tackled Dyer Dyer's knee was never down. For a moment, Dyer stopped. But the sideline was yelling, "Go, go, go"!. So he did, and Dyer picked up 37 yards.

On 3rd and 4 at the 17 Dyer took a handoff up the middle for a 16 yard gain. On 2nd and goal from the 1, Auburn sent kicker Wes Byrum on for a 19 yard field goal. Byrum easily drilled the kick and sent the War Eagle and Auburn flying high with their first national championship!

However, if Cam Newton is found guilty of the recruiting allegations and accepting a loan from Auburn, the National title could be taken away. But for now, Auburn is the champions!
