Heisman Trophy 2009

There are players from 8-4 teams and 12-0 teams that are stars, but the Heisman Trophy defines everything. Will it be Mark Ingram? Colt McCoy? Ndamukong Suh? Let's find out.

Finalist descriptions
Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
Ingram is a power running back that can break many tackles and score touchdowns on a run that most NFL running backs would get 2 or 3 yards. Alabama is going to the BCS Title and they are favored to win so I like Ingram's stock to rise there. He is also more popular then some finalists and he will get an edge there.

Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
McCoy struggled vs. Nebraska, but he was there for his Longhorns when they needed him most of the time, like vs. Texas Tech and Texas A&M. McCoy gained 478 total yards in a 49-39 win over arch-rival Texas A&M and he played big in most clutch situations. McCoy threw for 3512 yards and he threw 27 touchdown passes and he also ran for 348 yards and 3 scores on 128 carries. McCoy wants revenge in his senior year, and he might get it here.

Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Will Suh be the first DT to win the award and the first defensive player to win since 1997? The unblockable Suh recorded 12 and a half sacks and 23 tackles for loss, as well as 82 tackles. Suh might get some respect because people might want a defensive player to win the Heisman for only the second time. However, Suh is playing for a 9-4 team in the Holiday Bowl so that might hurt him.

Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
Had Florida beaten Alabama Tebow might have won, but I doubt Tebow will win because he played horribly in the loss. Although he played well in games against teams like Mississippi State and Arkansas, Tebow's stats are much worse then Colt McCoy's, throwing for 2413 yards and 18 touchdowns. Tebow also rushed for 859 yards and 13 TD's on 203 carries, but I think the Alabama loss takes him out of contention.

Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford
Gerhart outnumbered Mark Ingram, rushing for 1736 yards compared to his 142, and he ran for 26 touchdowns compared to Ingram's 15. However, Gerhart did get 62 more carries and his 5.6 yards per carry doesn't meet Ingram's 6.1. However, Gerhart's season low game was 86 yards. He ran all over opposing defenses and he could turn one yard gains into 20 yard gains. Gerhart is a power back but considering the fact that Stanford is 8-4 and playing in the Sun Bowl, I don't think Gerhart will win. And, he isn't very popular along the East Coast.

Baily's Pick: Colt McCoy, Texas
McCoy outnumbers Tim Tebow, and he is a quarterback playing for a BCS Title team. McCoy is great in clutch games and he should win.
