Bay Area NFL Draft Picks

Oakland Raiders: 1st round Grade F/D-: What are you thinking Al Davis? You draft speedy receiver Darrius-Heyward-Bay over Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin, and Hakeem Nicks. He probably would have been there in the second round. Heyward-Bay is a great route runner, and he ran a 4.23 in the 40 yard dash. Coach Tom Cable says "he is the best route runner i the draft". An announcer on ESPN covering the draft said "the only reason Oakland keeps getting good picks is because they keep using them badly". Davis always picks speed over talent, but when he is wide open this could be a problem for opposing teams. In the second round the Raiders chose Ohio State hard-hitting safety Michael Mitchell, who Tom Cable says is the hardest hitting player in the draft. Some other picks were Louis Murphy, a good receiver who has talent. They also picked Wisconsin DE Matt Shaugenhassy, Brandon Myers, Iowa TE, Oregon State DE Norris Slade, and Missouri DE Stryker Sulak. Overall Grade: D+.
San Francisco 49ers: 1st round grade: A+
Talk about lucky. Coach Mike Singeltary said it was one of the last-case scenarios they had in mind. Many of the 49ers staff members said, "he is the best WR since Terrell Owens left towns in 2003. Crabtree, a fast, focused, many other adjectives to describe him. Bad throws can sometimes end up in his hands. He knows which route to run and you know he is gonna run it well. The Niners never had a franchise receiver, and now they might have their answer. In the third round they chose Alabama RB Glen Coffee, a very talented back who helped power Alabama to it's awesome year, Pitt LB Scott McKillop, Ball State QB Nate Davis, who led Ball State to it's great season, where they were ranked #11 at one point. He was one of the top 5 quarterbacks until the last 2 games of 2008. They selected Bear Pascoe, one of the nations top tight ends [top 10] in the sixth round, LSU powerful DT Ricky-Jean-Fraincos, and Curtis Taylor, another LSU player [safety]. Overall Grade: A
Great draft for SF. At least one of these players will lead the team in something other than dropped passes, missed tackles or fumbled handoffs.
So, that's how the Bay Area teams shaped up in the draft. Bay Area teams overall draft grade:C+.
