Tuesday MLB Recap

The first week of the season has been kind to us, unless your team is one of the suffering ones.

Action-packed games, walk-off wins, and no-hit bids have been the story in opening week. We've had some surprises, like Boston, San Francisco, and New York (Yankees) all getting swept in their first series.

Tuesday was more of the same.

Here's the update from Tuesday's MLB action.

The New York Mets were one of the three remaining undefeated teams, but they fell from that spot when Washington beat them 6-2. Ross Detweiler had a strong start, Ian Desmond homered, and Wilson Ramos knocked in a run on a double and scored a run.

Arizona, one of the two other remaining undefeated teams, had a tough, close game with the Padres. Paul Goldschmidt's deep double to left was enough to send the game to extra innings, where Chris Young came through with a two-run bomb to left field. The D-Backs won 4-2.

Detroit and Tampa Bay both hadn't lost a game, but the Tigers prevailed 5-2 in the battle of the undefeated teams. Austin Jackson hit a tying homer in the seventh, and Prince Fielder's RBI single was the first of three runs in the eighth, which put Detroit ahead 5-2 (the final margin).

The 4-1 Dodgers were locked in a 1-1 game in the eighth inning when Andre Either hit a change-up deep into right field (not opposite-field) for a home run. Clayton Kershaw didn't get the win, but he pitched effectively. LA won 2-1.

Toronto lit up Daniel Bard and shut down the Red Sox in a 7-3 win. Boston had 1 out and the bases loaded in the sixth (down 3-1) and Kevin Youkillis grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Edwin Encarnacion knocked in two runs and scored once, and JP Arencibia hit an opposite-field single to drive in two runs.

Game of the Night: Yankees 5, Orioles 4: 12 innings

Boy, was this a good game.

Raul Ibanez hit a ground-rule double deep to right-center field to drive in a run in the twelfth, as the Yankees beat the Orioles. Derek Jeter homered for the Yankees.

Jeter's homer knocked in the first run of the game, as he drove a pitch to straightaway center. However, Freddy Garcia had a wild start, and he gave up four quick runs.

In the sixth, though, the Yankees tried to cut the deficit. Andruw Jones hit a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 2. Russell Martin hit what looked like an easy groundout, but Mark Reynolds kicked the ball, and couldn't get Martin at first. Another run scored.

Brett Gardner capitalized on the error, driving a low pitch into right field for a base hit. Curtis Granderson scored, and the game was tied.

After a ton of missed opportunities, Ibanez finally came through, and Mariano Rivera picked up the save in the bottom of the twelfth. An otherwise solid start for Wei-Yin Chen was blown because of the Reynolds error.

New York is now 2-3, and Baltimore is 3-2.
