Baily's Monday MLB Recap & Blog Update

Finally!

Baseball's back. Two of my favorite words, when they're in the same sentence.

The Cardinals, Yankees, Marlins, Phillies, Red Sox, Giants, and the rest of the league have returned to work and all have one goal in mind: winning the 2012 Fall Classic.

Of course, only one will win, and 29 will fall short, with some getting closer than others. This year, some of the expected contenders have started off on the wrong foot.

Let's see if they picked up the slack Monday or if those slow starts continued. Also, let's see what's going on around the league.

Here we go! Baseball's back.

San Francisco won their first game of the season after three heartbreaking losses to the D-Backs. Barry Zito pitched a four-hit shutout, Pablo Sandoval golfed his second homer of the season, and Brandon Crawford hit a three-run double.

Philadelphia lost their third straight game, falling to 1-3 with a 6-2 loss to the 2-3 Marlins, an expected contender. Omar Infante hit two homers to left field and Gaby Sanchez knocked in two runs for Florida, who made Anibal Sanchez a winner in his strong start.

Ryan Sweeney's single lifted the Red Sox over the Blue Jays for their first win of the season, by a score of 4-2. Dustin Pedroia homered for the Red Sox and Alfredo Aceves picked up his first save.

Derek Jeter's four-hit night and Ivan Nova's strong start helped the Yankees win their first game, 6-2 over the Orioles. Andruw Jones homered for New York, and he scored a run on a sacrifice fly.

Matt Holliday, David Freese, and Yadier Molina homered as the Cardinals beat the Reds easily, 7-1, to win their fourth game of the season. Jake Westbrook picked up a win in his first start.

Game of the Night: Brewers vs Cubs

Milwaukee beat Chicago 7-5 for their second win of the season on Monday Night Baseball. The Brewers torched Shawn Camp for three runs in less than two innings of work, breaking a 3-3 tie and taking a 6-3 lead.

Mat Gamel hit the go-ahead triple in the sixth, hitting an outside pitch down the line to right field and scoring Corey Hart. Jonathan Lucroy hit him in on a sacrifice fly, and while he could've been thrown out, the throw was off.

Aramis Ramirez knocked in two runs, one on a double to the gap in left-center field, which put Milwaukee up 6-3, and one on a sacrifice fly. Ramirez returned to Chicago for the first time since signing with the Brewers.

Shaun Marcum picked up his first win in a strong start where his off-speed pitches forced Chicago to fly out and ground out, and when the Cubs expected a fastball, he threw a breaking ball for a strikeout.
