Giants Baseball; How San Francisco Keeps Winning Torturous Games

The Giants motto is torture, right? They win torturous games.

But for most of August, they weren't. They hadn't won a one-run game in August since Wednesday, but they can still win them.

As we all know, the Giants can pitch. From Tim Lincecum to Eric Surkamp, they can always rely on someone to get the win. But even with Pablo Sanodval, Carlos Beltran, Cody Ross, and Aubrey Huff, they can't seem to score.

Last year's offense was bad. This year's offense is horrible.

Sure, they are 71-62. But that's because they win close games. Their pitching is spectacular. Even Eric Surkamp was able to keep that going.

The Giants have won back-to-back games for the first time since August 13 and 14. And it's all thanks to the pitching-and a little bit of offense.

Surkamp went six innings and gave up just one run, striking out three and using his nasty breaking ball to get out of jams. In the tenth, Mark DeRosa flared a single to center, stole a base (barely) and scored on Jeff Keppinger's RBI single.

San Francisco has been given the opportunities thanks to their pitching. If they had the bats the Yankees did, they would be guaranteed at least a playoff bid.

But if they had the pitching the Yankees did, the Giants probably would be short of fifty wins. It's the unique combination that makes up the Giants team. But if San Francisco had Buster Posey, this might not be a problem.

San Francisco has picked up boosts, and Jeff Keppinger is a big one. His opposite-field single on Saturday and his two-run double on Friday saved the Giants. And he looks to do more.

So does the rest of the offense.

A's Fall To White Sox On Walk-Off Home Run

In late innings, the Oakland Athletics are almost unstoppable. However, Jordan Danks found a way to stop the A's. Danks hit a home run to right with two outs in the ninth to propel the White Sox to a 4-3 win over the A's. Both teams are competing in the AL Wild Card race, so the loss is crucial for the A's, who received a solid outing from Brandon McCarthy in his return from the DL. McCarthy allowed three earned runs in six-plus innings pitched, and the two teams were tied after seven innings. Both teams received solid efforts from the bullpen, but the White Sox triumphed at the end. Dayan Viciedo, A.J Pierzynski and Alexi Ramirez also homered, all taking advantage of mistakes by McCarthy.
