NBA Draft 2012: Why the Bobcats Must Draft Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

The Charlotte Bobcats came into the NBA draft lottery hoping for the first pick in the draft. However, they ended up with the second.

Even though they probably won't get a crack at star power forward Anthony Davis, there's another player the Bobcats need to pick.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was Davis' teammate at Kentucky, and he is a small forward with lots of upside. He can score down low, he can shoot, he can defend, and he can rebound.

And that's just a small portion of what Kidd-Gilchrist can do.

He was always Kentucky's second-best player, and that's very impressive for a championship team full of great NBA prospects. MKG is a good shooter, and he knows how to create good shots for himself and his teammates.

Although Kidd-Gilchrist isn't great at scoring from the perimeter, he is a great post player, and he is tough enough to get to the rim and make his shots there. He is always there for his team, and while he is an inconsistent scorer, he always finds a way to make a positive impact on the game.

A guy like MKG is exactly what the Bobcats need to rebuild their team. They're set in the backcourt with Kemba Walker and D.J. Augustin, and having a tough, solid defender who can guard multiple guys and multiple spots will really help.

On offense, his ability to create shots and his post play will make him a great target for Charlotte's two guards. As long as the three develop good chemistry, Charlotte will have a formidable nucleus of young players.

Bradley Beal and Thomas Robinson are both good options, but the Bobcats are already set in the backcourt, and Kidd-Gilchrist is a better post player and has more upside than Robinson.

Even though the Bobcats wanted Anthony Davis, they should be more than happy with MKG. He is a great post player, and he rebounds and blocks shots tremendously for his size. He is a smart player, and his defensive versatility will be key for the Bobcats.

On the offensive side of the ball, his versatility will also be key. He is a great athlete, and his aggressive mentality has helped him set himself up for great shots, which has led to his high shooting percentage. He will be a great target for Walker and Augustin, and the three should mesh well.

Although the Bobcats finished 7-59 with Walker and Augustin, adding MKG should be what the Bobcats need to successfully rebuild their team. Even though he is considered as the second-best draft prospect, don't be surprised if he ends up with the best career in this draft class.

And don't be surprised when Kidd-Gilchrist is dominating at the NBA level.
