Three Reasons The Cal Bears Need to Fire Jeff Tedford

Jeff Tedford has led the Bears to success. A near Rose Bowl apperance. Five bowl victories. A share of the 2006 Pac-10 title.

But in 2010, the Bears dropped to 5-7. A talented team missed a bowl game for the first time since 2002. And talk of firing Tedford was on.

Now, Tedford is on the hot seat, and the Bears need to succeed. While the defense and running game looked good, there were areas Tedford and Cal needed to fix. Badly.

While success has been something Cal has enjoyed for the past decade, it is time to part ways with Tedford. Sure, more and more running backs are coming in to Cal and out in the NFL, but that is all that he has done in the past two years.

Here are three reasons why Tedford needs out from Berkeley.

Reason 1: Too Many Penalties
If you watched the Cal-Fresno State game on Saturday, you know what I'm talking about.

Cal committed eleven penalties against the Bulldogs, and while the Bears won the game easily, it wasn't pretty. California lost 86 yards thanks to these penalties.

As we all know, 11 penalties is the result of a badly-coached team. This has been a problem for Tedford throughout the past few years. And this has cost the Bears.

In some cases, a bowl bid.

Penalties have been a problem for Tedford's squads throughout his Berkeley tenure. If it costs the Bears a crucial game, say Oregon or Stanford, you know who to blame.

Reason 2: Conservative Decision-Making
Tedford's decision-making has been less than bad during his Cal career.

He has been one of the more conservative coaches in the Pac-10/12, with his decisions to kick a field goal on 4th and 1 and to punt from the opponent's 30-yard line, he has drawn many boos.

While some of his decisions have paid off, many have cost the Bears. His play-calling decisions haven't been much to look at it, and it has cost the Bears a couple games.

Tedford's fondness for the field goal has cost California so many [too many] times. California has been in many close games, and last year, two losses to Oregon and Arizona cost Cal national attention and a bowl berth.

Let's put it this way; California cannot be `victimized by one of these losses again.

Reason 3: Sloppy Play
You've seen it. Don't lie to me. The Cal Bears can just be sloppy at times.

Dropped passes. Fumbles. Easy field goals and extra points missed. That criticism can be directed to Tedford and the coaching.

Against Fresno State, you saw a bad snap, two extra points blocked, and an inaccurate quarterback. Although the Bears won, Marvin Jones, Keenan Allen, and the defense were the reasons for victory.

The Bears have been victimized in the past thanks to this sloppy play. And then there's the question: Is Tedford emphasizing how important these routine plays are to make?

We don't know. All we can hope for is that it comes to a stop.

Isn't the problem that the Cal fans seem to be ok with always being good and never being great? Cal is arguably the best public school on the planet and it demands the best from its students and faculty but the community seems fine with the Holiday Bowl as the ceiling for the program.
