2011 NBA Finals; Dallas Takes Advantage of Miami Mistakes, Wins First NBA Finals

Dirk Nowitzki was one of twelve from the field in the first half of the biggest game of his career. No one else was totaling big numbers...except Jason Terry, who was having the game of his career. Yet the Mavs were winning.

In the second half, Jason Terry was off. Just like 1st half Dirk, he wasn't making any of his shots. Who would step up for him? Second half Dirk.

That teamwork would pay off.

Jason Terry scored 27, Dirk tallied 21, and the Mavericks won the franchise's first NBA title ever with a 105-95 win over the Miami Heat, who was led by 21 from LeBron James.

The Miami Heat were expected to dominate Dirk and the Mavs with their big three of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh, but LeBron and Chris Bosh struggled, and Dwyane Wade was on at times and off at times.

Today was one of his off days. Wade scored just 17 points and turned the ball over five times, while LeBron turned the ball over six times. The Mavs had a lot of turnovers, but something the Mavs did have was better free throw shooting.

Dallas only shot 67 percent from the free throw line, but the Heat were horrific from the line, making just 20 of 33 shots from the line, which is under 61 percent shooting. Miami's ability to get to the line was followed by terrible shooting.

Another thing that the Mavericks, who were only up by seven at one point in the fourth quarter, did to run out the clock was rebound the ball. They dwindled down clock by grabbing offensive rebound after offensive rebound late in the game.

Although the Heat and a lot of NBA fans still believe Dallas is the better team, it was Dirk's shooting that got Dallas past Miami. He drilled a couple fadeaways in the fourth to put away the Heat, and J.J Barea and Jason Kidd stepped up by each draining a huge three for Dalals.

In the fourth quarter, with Dallas up 87-77, Barea penetrated to the hoop and laid in a finger roll, which got a good bounce off the rim. Miami had back-to-back sloppy possessions, and Dallas excelled at holding the Heat.

While the Mavericks were able to get off good shots, the Mavericks pressured the Heat and hardly ever gave up an open three, and when they did, Miami missed. It looked like the Mavericks were definitely the better team, and by the defense they played you could tell.

So finally, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, and Jason Kidd have won their long-awaited NBA title. Just about every player made a difference (since the series was so close), especially Nowitzki.

In the fourth quarter, which is usually where at least one of the Heat stars step up, Dirk outplayed every one of them, especially LeBron, who averaged three points in the fourth quarter. Mr. Clutch, aka Dirk, made two big baskets in games 2 and 4 to step up.

While Dirk averaged 26 points per game (more than each of the Heat players), LeBron averaged less than 18 points. You heard me. Less than 18 points on average for the two-time NBA MVP!

All those turnovers and mistakes from the Heat are inexcusable, and they know only practice and hard work will change that. For the Mavericks, they've put a lot of that in, and they deserved the NBA title they got.
