The Axe Is Back!

Cal 37, Stanford 16

Halftime: Score is 10-3 Bears. Cal has not played well besides a nice opening drive that started with a 60 yard pass that looked ike a 7 yard loss, and that led to 3 points and Cal also scored on a impressive pass to Shane Vereen for a 59 yard touchdown. The Cardinal didn't do all that well either, missing a 25 yard FG and fumbling inside the 10, where Cal recovered. Stanford had 3 because Cal stopped them on 3 straight downs from the 1. Cal was picked off in the end zone also, but scored after a fumble.Stanford scored on a 12 play, 72 yard drive that resulted in a field goal. In the second half, Stanford was picked off with 13:48 in the 3rd, and Cal drove 40 yards and Kevin Riley found a wide open Cameron Morrah from a yard out to put Cal up 17-3. 2 minutes, 3 seconds later, Riley completed a pass to Verran Tucker, who lateroled to Jahvid Best for a 14 yard score. After a 41 yard run by Jeremy Ross to the Cardinal 7, and a 4 yard personal foul penalty on Stanford, Best ran in from 3 yards but missed the PAT because of a fumbled snap. Down 30-3, Stanford had 4th and 1 after a horrible call on a pass, Toby Gerhart of Stanford was stopped short on a run, and Cal took over. 59 seconds after the final quarter had started, on a first and 15 from the Cardinal 45, Best ran 45 yards for a score, putting Cal up 37-3. After a succeeded 4th down attempt by Stanford, Tavita Pritchard hit Doug Baldwin for a 34 yard strike. Stanford recovered a onside kick, and converted a 4th and 2 from the Bears 31 on a 7 yard pass, and got 10 yards on a Cal penalty, Gerhart scored from 10 yards out. Aaron Zagory missed the PAT. After a Bears punt, Stanford looked like they were going to make the score 23-37 on the Cal 27 but Michael Mohammed of Cal intercepted Pritchard. After a Bears punt, Stanford had a chance to drive, but Marcus Ezeff intercepted him. Instead of scoring, Cal ran out the clock and won the axe, 37-16. Aftr Cal won, fans [including me] stormed the field and we got to meet Alex Mack, one of the best centers in all of college football, who was holding the Stanford Axe besides screaming fans chanting "We got the axe". It was more exciting for Cal because they got the axe back, and sophomores Best and Riley held the axe for the first time ever, and they played hard and deserved the axe back presented in Berkeley. Go Bears! 5-7 Card
